It was the learning and practice of writing gags for cartoonists that has helped me with all the other types of writing I do, including serious writing. It helped to visualise scenes when writing scripts and fiction, as well as, of course, with joke writing. One of the books that helped me to write freely and intuitively was Ray Bradbury’s Zen In the Art of Writing.
